Sugar & fibromyalgia – a really painful combo

Quitting sugar was a real turning point in my recovery from fibromyalgia.

Through my quest to find ways to treat my symptoms without medication, I found many articles suggesting a link between a diet high in sugar and chronic inflammation throughout the body.

I read that sugar can cause symptoms of chronic inflammation in the body:

  • Depression, anxiety, mood swings
  • Body pain
  • Constant fatigue and insomnia
  • Digestive issues: constipation, diarrhoea, reflux
  • Weight gain, bloating
  • Low immunity and frequent illness/infections
  • Migraines, headaches
  • Foggy brain, trouble concentrating

To anyone with fibromyalgia, these symptoms would sound very familiar!

I was a serious sugar addict. I could never have enough of it – the more sugar I ate, the more I needed to eat. The worse I felt, the more I craved sugar.

Yet, I was so desperate to find a way to manage my fibro symptoms and get back to living the life I wanted to. So, I cut refined sugar from my diet, I went ‘cold turkey’, and within 3 weeks my symptoms were improving. Amazing!

Giving up refined sugar was one of several changes I made as part of my recovery from fibromyalgia, but it was a real game changer, and certainly one of the best things I have ever done for my health.

Being able to live my life on my own terms, instead of being held back by symptoms, I wanted to help others to do the same, so I wrote about quitting sugar and the other steps I took in my recovery in my book FibromyAWESOME.
